Donate to Advance Research and Education
With your help, the American Neuromuscular Foundation can fund research that will improve the lives of patients with neuromuscular diseases.

AANEM guidelines provide evidence based recommendations for the assessment and treatment of muscle and nerve disorders. Adherence to these guidelines will help ensure relevance, efficiency, cost effectiveness, and diagnostic accuracy in the practice of electrodiagnostic (EDX) medicine and quality patient care.

To develop the guidelines, AANEM works with physicians who specialize in neuromuscular (NM) and EDX medicine. They are developed, in part, to meet the demands of payers, accrediting bodies, and maintenance of certification and licensure programs, helping them determine the appropriate standard of care in NM medicine. If the resources you need are not listed below, please contact and our staff will help you find answers.

Creation of New Guidelines

AANEM members, committees, and sections are encouraged to submit guideline topic. The Practice Issues Review Committee reviews nominated topics on the basis of the following criteria:
  • Members’ needs
  • Prevalence of condition
  • Health impact of condition for the individual and others
  • Socioeconomic impact
  • Extent of practice variation
  • Quality of available evidence
  • External constraints on practice
  • Urgency for evaluation of new practice technology
