AANEM has developed a
position statement regarding the proper performance of autonomic testing. This position statement was created to assist payers in the development of their medical coverage policies for these tests.
The document provides a general overview of the requisite qualifications and training of the individual performing the studies, as well as listing the necessary steps for the appropriate performance of the testing. The AANEM strongly recommends that autonomic testing procedures be performed by physicians with comprehensive knowledge of neurological and autonomic disorders to ensure precise interpretation and diagnosis at the completion of the testing. It is also AANEM’s position that the same physician should directly supervise and interpret the data collected in various autonomic procedures (including those performed by a technician) on-site and in real time. A relevant history to understand the scope of the problem and a relevant physical examination should be performed in order to properly design and perform the testing.
