COVID-19 Vaccine: AANEM Publishes Guidance for Patients with NMDs

At the end of 2020, with announcement of the impending approval of not one but two vaccines against COVID-19, AANEM staff faced a sudden influx of phone calls and emails from members, nonmember physicians, and even some NM patients inquiring about the safety of such vaccines for NM patients. The AANEM Quality & Patient Safety Committee quickly took up the task of researching the data available on the COVID-19 vaccines, as well as looking at the safety and efficacy of vaccines in general in this patient population.

Changes to Office Visit Evaluation and Management Codes Coming in 2021: Your Questions Answered

In 2019, the CPT Editorial Panel approved changes that will significantly impact office and outpatient evaluation and management (E/M) codes.  These changes will only affect CPT codes 99202-99215 and will go into effect January 1, 2021.
 

AANEM Assists in Creation of New Codes to Account for Additional Services During Public Health Emergency

On September 8, 2020 the American Medical Association (AMA) published an update to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set that includes two new code additions for reporting medical services required by the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The two additions have been approved for immediate use.
 

CMS Announces Option to Opt-out of MIPS for 2020

CMS announced that MIPS eligible clinicians will have the choice to opt-out completely or partially from the 2020 MIPS program by completing a hardship exemption application and indicating that it is due to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.

IRS Announces CARES Act Relief Funds are TAXABLE to For-Profit Health Providers

Just days before the July 15 tax deadline, the IRS announced that funds paid to for-profit healthcare providers through the COVID-19 Provider Relief Fund are taxable income subject to the 21% corporate tax rate.

Resources for Small Practices During COVID-19

Many states across the US are seeing an uptick in COVID-19 cases which has led to a renewed shortage of PPE in several geographic regions. Some areas are also continuing to struggle with a shortage of COVID-19 tests. The AANEM policy department has received several emails and messages, primarily from smaller practices, asking for advice on obtaining both PPE and access to COVID-19 tests for non-symptomatic patients prior to EDX testing. In an effort to assist these members, we’ve compiled a list of current resources and suggestions based on research and conversations with other medical groups.

New Study Shows Disparities in EDX Training in Residency Programs

Results from a 2017 survey shared at the 2018 annual meeting of the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) illustrate significant disparities in the amount of training that neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR) residents receive in electrodiagnostic (EDX) medicine. 

AANEM Updates Evaluation and Management (E/M) Position Statement

The AANEM Professional Practice Committee recently conducted an extensive review of the current
Billing for Same Day Evaluation & Management and Electrodiagnostic Testing position statement, taking into account member feedback from the past year and a half. The committee made several edits to the language in the document, and added a fifth common scenario demonstrating when it may be appropriate to bill for a separate evaluation and management (E/M) when performing EDX testing.
