On Friday, February 17, 2012, with bipartisan support from both the House and Senate, a 27% reduction required by the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula was delayed. Unfortunately, Congress was only able to agree to a short-term solution, delaying the cuts until the end of 2012, rather than a permanent fix to the SGR. President Obama declared that he will sign the short term solution legislation into law in the coming days.
To avert significant cuts to the 2013 Medicare fee schedule, Congress will need to continue to work to address the SGR formula. AANEM has been working with the AMA in advocating for permanent repeal of the SGR and will continue those efforts in the coming months.
