Recap: 2014 AMA House of Delegates Interim Meeting

The American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates (HOD) held its interim 2014 meeting  in Dallas, TX, November 8-11. A variety of important issues were reviewed by the HOD, including: An update from the Center for Disease Control on Ebola response, the status of the Sustainable Growth Rate repeal by Congress, changes in the maintenance of certification (MOC) process, the role of reference pricing in controlling medical costs, and modifications to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) meaningful use program.

The AMA’s Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) provided an update on its efforts to modernize the AMA’s foundational document, the Code of Medical Ethics. The update process began in 2008 and is the first thorough review in over 60 years. In addition to reviewing each Opinion, CEJA reorganized the Opinions into a “more intuitive chapter structure to ensure that guidance is easy to find, easy to read, and easy to apply.” Noted AANEM Delegate John Kincaid, MD, “The revised Code of Ethics will be a useful reference for issues encountered daily in office and hospital settings.”

All AMA members are invited to review the document and offer comments through its online forum by December 31. One free credit of CME is offered to AMA members. The final document will likely be adopted in the summer of 2015.

AANEM was represented by Dr. Kincaid and William Pease, MD, alternate delegate.

Dr. Kincaid  is stepping down from the HOD position, after serving in the role since 1999 when he replaced Jasper Daube, MD. “Serving in the HOD has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career. The scope of issues the AMA deals with ranges from very broad to very specific. I am stepping down from this position to allow another AANEM member to have this career broadening experience,” he stated.

Dr. Pease will take over as the AANEM delegate. In the next few months, the AANEM will open the application process for members interested in serving as alternate HOD delegate.
