Comparative Billing Report on Electrodiagnostic Testing to be Released in June – Check Your Mailbox!

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced last week that it will release  Comparative Billing Reports (CBRs) on electrodiagnostic (EDX) testing this month.

Various Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) have compiled and released a limited number of CBRs for several years to specific providers. CMS, however, formalized and expanded the program nationwide beginning in January 2014.  The CBRs on EDX testing will be only the sixth CBRs released by CMS under the new program. They will be sent only to a sample of a maximum of 5,000 nonhospital based EDX providers this month. There is no information on how the 5000 physicians are chosen.

Please check your mail for your CBR!  If you receive a CBR, please scan it and e-mail it to: policy@aanem.org so that AANEM can track the data released for each state and review the national average data.

Each CBR will be unique to you and contain a statistical analysis of billing practices for EDX testing.  It will provide you with a comparison of your billing practices with those of your state peers and with the national average. No data attributable to any specific provider will be made publicly available.

According to Millie Birr, AANEM’s health policy director, “The fact that a CBR on EDX medicine is coming out is somewhat troubling, as CBRs are generally done in areas that CMS believes are prone to improper payments. However, we will closely monitor the release of the CBR and any potential impacts it may have. The reports also may help shed some light on the effects the reimbursement cuts had on the performance of EDX tests.

A free webinar hosted by CMS contractor eGlobalTech and its partner, Palmetto GBO, will be held on Wednesday, July 9, from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. EST. The webinar will provide an overview of the Comparative Billing Report, the Coverage Policy for EDX testing, billing resources, and a Q&A session.
