AANEM on Capitol Hill

12/16/2015

On Thursday, December 3, 2015, AANEM Health Policy Director Millie Suk, JD, MPP, and Dane Christiansen, AANEM’s Washington representative from the Health and Medicine Counsel of Washington, returned to Capitol Hill in D.C. to discuss mandating standards for electrodiagnostic (EDX) medicine to ensure patients receive only high quality care from qualified providers.

Ms. Suk and Mr. Christiansen met with long-time EDX supporter Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) (photo at left, with Ms. Suk)  and the offices of Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) (Chair of Finance Committee), Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX) (Chair, House Ways and Means), Congressman Erik Paulsen (R-MN) (long-time EDX supporter, member of Ways and Means Health Subcommittee), and Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) (ranking member of Ways and means Health Subcommittee).

Senator Klobuchar and her staff agreed to be the Democrat lead for a Senate sign on letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) encouraging ongoing collaboration with the community to promote optimal patient care in EDX medicine. Although several other Senate offices have expressed interest in joining the letter, AANEM is still looking for a Republican co-leader for the letter. If you have a good relationship with a Republican Senate office, and would be willing to ask for their leadership on an appropriate outreach letter, please contact Millie Suk at msuk@aanem.com.

AANEM also met with representatives of patient organizations to solicit their support for community-based EDX medicine advocacy activities. The American Diabetes Association, the ALS Association, and other stakeholders are interested in seeing relevant materials and possible future participation. Some of the neuropathy and muscular dystrophy organizations already plan to endorse our upcoming outreach on this issue.

AANEM will ramp up outreach efforts after Congress returns from its recess in January.
